My car self destructed on friday (ecu has gone bye-bye) so my catting season is very probably over for this year crying (unless I can 'borrow' the wifes car). It had only done 92,000 miles and was still lovely inside and out, but the ecu replacement is a dealer part which will cost approx £1100 to sort out.

Now looking at boring old man estate's ............ NOT Vauxhall's though

a boring old mans estate has plenty of room for all your gear and a barrow and the kitchen sink! i always insist on an estate as my company car as it is so easy to go fishing in. Get a 2.0 mondeo tdi nothing boring about it at all and good fuel economy.

Have you tried the scrap yards?

needs to be same part number and year of manufacture as yours.

The ECU went on my explorer about a year ago bought one from a scrap explorer £100 plugged it in and off you go runs rough for about 50 miles till it self learns then sweet as a nut.

worth ago if the motors ok apart from that.

Whats wrong with Vauxhall?  I've got a 1.7 Astra Diesel Estate, lovely motor, been to Hungary and back in it, did 57 MPG doing 90-100 MPH most of the way travelling at night. Holds all my fishing gear easily including a large barrow when needed. Gives a very comfortable ride, wouldn't change it for anything.

Had a brand new V40 for 4 years and it was brilliant, I am told the 50 is even better.

Own a brand new Honda Civic at the mo and the build quality is world class.

Driven VWs a bit and they were always thirsty and gone off fords although I do have a focus estate for fishing :)

What's an ecu ? - i take it its not the name of the car ?????

I have a passat estate - brilliant car - had a ford focus estate and peugeot 307 estate before all of which okay - the passat is brilliant - I get 46 to the gallon mostly and on a run can get 49.6 average

The ecu basically is the car's computer - there's a bloke in Redcar who sells the units for £250 so I may get one and then sell it (as long as its working ok) because I will only get scrap for it at present.

Everyone I have spoken to rates the Passat very highly

Go for the V50 out of that lot. Got an omega estate at the moment which is massive inside but expensive to run. All the toys though. Am in for a job interview this week that I think comes with a car so bring it on. Estate all the way I think. I looked at 4x4's when I was shopping around but to be honest, there is more room in an estate.
