Can someone tell me are Zander and what the Americans call walleye one and the same???

The reason I ask is the Americans reckon they are very partial to leeches??

Not quite one and the same Eric. Same genus, different species. European one is Zander lucioperca,
(formally Stizostedion lucioperca) and the American "walleye" is Zander vitreus.

I've had jacks take leeches so quite possible Zander will. Only one way to find out mate!

No they are not the same fish Eric, although they are closely related. The zanders latin name is Sitzostedion lucioperca, whilst the walleye is sitzostedion vitreum. This is probably of no use at all, All i can suggest is give them a go. I have fished Claydon for the cats with Bri and he has used leeches and he never got any takes off zander. Mind you, he never got any takes off cats either!!grin

Bugger, Maurice must have been typing faster than me!! lol

Eric,

Just remember that you are fishing for Zander in winter!  River temperatures well below 10 Centigrade.  Leeches won't wriggle much in winter temperatures therefore less vibration and less attraction. Give it a go by all means but if you don't get any result after a couple of outings I would give em up. Save em for next summer catting.

Regards,
Maurice
