I have to ask you lot a quick couple of leech care questions ................ as I still have 4 live ones from my last trip
What sort of containers do you keep your leeches in ?
What type of water do you put them in - tap, r.o, mineral ?
Do you feed them ? IF yes what on ?
How long do they live ?
Cheers
Keep them in mineral water and they will last 6 months without feeding. The chlorine in tap water will kill them. As they are a fresh water animal do not keep them in R.O. water. They can be kept in a large tupperware bowl or similar. i think Brian keeps his in a 5 litre water container with the top cut off.
No the top on, the little fookers will get out otherwise , i keep mine in a gallon tupperware box tightly sealed with a few air holes drilled in the lid, make these as small as possible. I have a well filtered koi pool so i just use the water straight from the pond, i keep mine in the fridge and usually change it every couple of weeks. make up some gel with same type of water and keep that in fridge as well, then when you want to take some, put them in the gel and keep them in a cool box. Look after them they will last months unless you put them up the tree like i did at Split last week lol
Cheers lads - hopefully they will last until my next session
I've kept them alive and healthy for a year or more. The most important factors are keeping them as cold as possible (4 or 5 Centigrade), space them out as much as possible, do regular 50% water changes and avoid temperature shock. (Equalize the temperature before doing water changes).
I now have them in a large goldfish bowl at the back of my garage with a piece of cloth acting as a lid tied down using elastic bands.
