Well its down to experimentation and diversification really. We fished all day without a touch and I got unceasing ribbing for my latest experiment lol.
Got dubbed Eric the carp and wise cracks about them not ever having fished with a carp angler on a catting session etc etc.
However I had the last laugh.lol
In the evening changed one of my bottom rods for a dumbell with 2 of Maurice's leeches. About 11pm it stormed off and pronptly snagged me under the big willow in the bottom corner. Despite all my efforts to stop it. Buggered the clutch on my 10000 trying to lock it out as well. I am still a bit peeved about it as it was my first take on leeches and felt a good fish too.Would have loved to have got it on the bank but just couldn't stop the run.
Then at 1205 am the other rod went with the 29.13 and what a cracking fight that was.
Now the bait you ask well luncheon meat I say so whats the twist?
A piece about the size of one square off a yorkie bar hence the ribbing.
But it was certainly worth all the pestering from the carp and the ribbing from my fishing partners and I bet Dave will give it a try next time
maybe
. Actually, next time i'm going to try a rat in the margins - we know they end up there
.
bloody long fish eric - did you measure it? I had a 35lb + that was 53 inches last week
It was a very long fish. When we netted it, i said to eric that it would go 35lb. You can tell its not pellett fed as its so lean - hence the weight.
Typical hard fighting long lean Pondwood cat.
Reckon it would have gone a lot more from a fishery allowing ground bait.
We were a bit surprised when we weighed her, Dave thought it might go 35 when we had it on the mat, only thing I can say is hope Dave's scales are ok PMSL.
No I am sure they are fine but it was a bloody big cat! My weigh slings are 6' so it must have been best part of 60 "
Led me a merry dance for a while gave me 5 yds then took ten back lol.Luckily it was in open water most of the time. Not bad for a cube of luncheon meat 1 1/2" long by 3/4" square. On the bottom 14" hooklink to a size 1 teflon carp hook & 1 oz running lead. Hence the ribbing about the carp fishing. However he who laughs last............lol
I think there's a lot of mileage in changing bait size, shape etc even for cats - I'm certain that they have the ability to 'learn' - they just forget more quickly based upon their state of 'hunger'
Nice fish Maurice
Is that the sandbar Maurice ? Did a couple of guest trips on there with Shaun , had a 45 off there in 2004 .
Yes Ian it's the sandbar.
Cheers Maurice
Just got back from Pondwood, the last weekend for the year. Only four cats were caught last night, and needless to say neither me or my dad caught.
Had a couple of good runs on the new Katmandoo PUPS but each time struck into thin air. Seems to be the theme at Pondwood.
Oh well, there is always next year!!!
Has anyone fished kidney since we were there mate?
Have given it a go, but there seemed to be little or no interest. Saying that, since September they haven't seem interested in anything!!!!
Small kittens? might be worth fishing one rod scaled down a touch, just a thoughtJust got back from Pondwood, the last weekend for the year.
