Right fellas, I never thought I would see the day but I want to make some of my own boilies. Am targetting a venue that is mainly a carp venue but has cats to massive figures. The info I have had is as you would expect the cats come out to boilies very regularly, so my plan is to knock up some of my own and put a rod out with them on. The problem is I have never made any before and really do not know where to start. Help and recipes would be much appreciated. I can get the basic recipe and instructions on line but one of the recipes I was planning was to add ground up salmon and halibut pellets, along with herring and trout oil. What do you think? Like I said any help would be gratefully appreciated. Was planning on making the boilies large but just rolling them by hand so that they are not so perfectly round, I know that this kind of thing can help on waters that get a lot of boilie pressure.

HELP!

I have done that m8 with Halibut groundbait egg and bits of other oils and then rolled them to a good size boiled for 1 min sometimes 2 to get a hardened skin and then left them overnight.
They lasted all night aswell m8 but do not go very hard and often crack if left to long to try and harden then go moldy.

hi Karl, i've been doing a lot of experimenting with boilies over the winter and spring while carp fishing and if you get the ingredients from somwhere like CC Moores, AA baits, ect, then you're laughing with a half decent recepie and a blender, i've done a few batches at about 3-4 pound a kilo. most importantly though, they have been outfishing most branded baits i've compared them to.

the mix been doing well with is:

20% LT94
5% blod powder
20% blended vitalin
20% anchovy fishmeal
10% semolina
5% paprika/codliver oil mix.
20% ground high oil halibut pellets

with 10ml pellet oil, 20ml of liquidised squid and liver.

The first batch are made and drying as we speak, ingredients include ground halibut and salmon oil pellets, herring oil, pellet oil and so on. Made some small ones about 15mm and some massive ones around 30-35mm. If they dry ok will get some more on the go. These are a test batch.

How did the boilies do Karl? i have also been thinking about my own baits and have been mulling over flavours additives etc. i had an interesting convo, via ebay, with a firm that sells all the base mixes, flavours etc. They told me that whilst oils can be added they give no where the potency and smell of a concentrate flavour. For example a salmon boilie would be much more effective with a concentrated salmon liquid flavouring than with salmon oil alone. Also of note on their site was liquid preservative which will prevent them going mouldy, having to freeze them or having to air dry them until they are like bricks.

Well the boilie experiment has gone ok. They came out cracking, even the large ones. Not had any cat runs on them yet, but not had any cat runs this yet so read into that what you will, have had carp on them though.

I made some up recently the recipie was

two eggs
10 ml of Prologic Monster Crab XXL
a big squirt of black food colouring (asda brand)
and enough pro logic Crustacia boilie mix to make a stiff paste

I wacked it all in the blender shells an all and rolled it out into 5 single baits about 30mm round by 70mm long

boiled them for 2 minutes so that the outer bit is hard but the inner bit still soft ish.

I havent caught owt on em yet but im going to make some more but blue instead

the only reason is to put any other fish off.  Im guessing that as they are barrell shaped and big that only Ctas with their big gobs would be able t deal with them.

If anyone has any thoughts on bait shape and size let me know as im always learning and would be happy with help and advice from the moggy collective

I'm no expert on boilies for cats but you just have to look at what is available commercial.  Katmandoo produce round and barrel baits, so either must be successful and have some basis behind them.

I suppose at the end of the day it is very dependent on the water you are fishing.

Any thoughts on neutral bouyancy boilies or pop ups???

I have just watched a german DVD called underwater attacks that lophius lent me, and it has some great footage of a cat around 80 - 100lb coming in to feed on small pellets. Exactly like every other fish, tail up in the air, head down, this one was almost verticle, made me think that if you were going to fish boilies a pop up would be fantastic. I would recommend this DVD to everyone, not the bit where they are clonking, which sounds just like Carls snoring, but when they are pellet fishing it is incredible.
