right guys one of the waters i fish has a high number of pike in so i was thinking would it be safe for the cats if i made some hook links from coated wire trace and double crimp a cat hook 2 it
NO!!! catfish will end up with a permanent smile like that!!! if you want to make sure you are safe for pike, use something like Pikesafe or KevSteelX that is designed for catfish. please don't use wire, coated or otherwise for catfish.
iv used pike safe and all ill say is bolox iv had 2 pike bite trough it.
i haven't used it personally, but i use kevsteelX for pike fishing instead of wire because it is so good. try to track some of that down.
for my live bait rigs I take out the lead inner from a length of leadcore and thread through fox soft trace wire before adding a swivel and a large single hook. The outer part of the leader protects the wire, I have tried it out in the shed and even when im pulling with all my strength I dont get any wire cutting through the leader materiel. I have only used it twice and have yet to catch a cat on it to fully road test it. If there is any doubt in my mind at all about the safety aspect of this set up I will stop using it.
Comments please ?
predator pro mate.
trev, i would not personally go down that path as i have tried using rig tubing over wire and catfish have chewed through that, so i would not be confident in leadcore, but it obviosly works for you. personally i like the kevsteelx because it is a lovely stiff braid but pike don't bite through it.
Seriously fellas, if anyone ever sees you using wire for cats your feet wont hit the ground as you get thrown off the venue. I cant stress enough not to use wire. A good strong braid is generally enough. Its one of the reasons I used ton up a lot, had massive pike on it, they really have to go some to get through that stuff. Failing that there are cat safe things out there as nick said but please dont use wire. We love our cats the way they are and dont wat them looking like the joker. Honeslty fellas its for your own good too, like I said if people see you using it you will get banned from cat waters all over. Please dont.
i asked for comments and will accept them as they are written from experience. Thanks
methinks I now have something to spend my crimbo Tackle voucher on
Braid all they way, I use berkley whiplash pro 50lb braid on my reels, its 0.17mm dia so really thin and tough to, also cast`s out a treat too and I use 45lb fox armadillo leader braid for the hook lenghts and I have had a cat snap me up yet. Wire is a bit extreme and would cut through a big cat or any fish like cheese, a lot of waters dont like anglers even to use braid, christ I wouldnt want to be the person caught using it as it would probably end up in the anglers mail or something and you would be banned.
Its an easy idea to think of, if there are pike about you turn to wire but I must admit I have never even been snapped by a pike when fishing good braid. I use quicksilver 45lb and the coated version for livebaiting, Great stuff and has put me many big pike on the bank apart from plenty of cats.
Not wishing to stir up any more poo but I was looking at some catfish pro pikesafe today and on the packet it says quite clearly that it is pvc coated soft wire, to be honest I thought it looked a bit flimsy and my home made leader coated wire was more substantial. I shall continue to use ESP shock leader at 45lb bs for most of my Catting hook lengths. Who knows maybe there is a little gap in the market for a specific Cat friendly but Pike proof materiel.
I like the idea of using the leadcore material. I am experimenting with a hooklink that is about 5 foot of leadcore with about 2 foot of lead taken out and a cat hook spliced on the end. An all in one freelining rig really. I cant promote the use of wire in any way but I suppose as long as the wire is well covered you should be ok. To be honest as I have said before I have never had pike go through good cat braid, and the coated quicksilver braid gives double protection. And dont worry about stiring things up, ask the questions mate, its what I set the site up for.
