So, now the winter is almost upon us and we are all looking at our stocks of tackle and thinking "What can I spend my money on next?". One of the main things we have not discussed is the rods we use and how they stand up to the task? I myself feel its time for a change and am looking at some of the greys prodigy in 3.25lb test. Would be interested to hear what you all use, what tests and if there are some that we just cannot be without.

JRC Defenders in 3lb test for me all the way. action right through from tip to but, soft enough to land big carp on small hooks but plenty of muscle to drag big cats around. also use Leeda Carp Attack 2.75 test for livies and really big baits bcause they have a casting action to chuk the bigger baits a long way.

Must adimt I like my fox warrior elite in 2.75 test but I think its timo to move over the 3lb test mark. Will keep the 2.75 for certain places and for carping and piking and such but I fancy having something a bit more, especially if I am gonna start taking braid around with me.

Used the Daiwa interlines sea fishing version quite a few years ago top bit of kit, though i didnt know they done coarse rods as well, hmm may look in to them.

I use the Daiwa msg Catfish Specials 11.3ft 3lb tc a tad soft, ish but plenty of power in them when your leaning in to the big girls.

Greys prodigy are lovely rods m8. they're a common sight on Langmans, so they must be just about top of the range, langmans being a semi-syndicated big carp lake.

The prodigy are one of greys lower ranges but they are just so good. Am really undecided what to go for, I like fox rods so I might step up a level to the Horizons but they only do them in 3 and 3.5 test. The prodigy's are cheaper though. I can get a set of three for under 300 quid.

you can get a set of 3 defnders for 75 quid and they won't snap, ever. plenty of power in them, but you can always buy the 13ft ones for an extra fiver if you want more power.

don't get me wrong i love the prodigys i've borrowed a greys rod (can't remember what ones but defo not the prodigy) when my old carp rods exploded (leeda carp-attack = sh*t) and they were lovely to use but i cant say they're so much better that they're worth that much money.

Just a little something I have trawled up that might piss you right off johny, sorry. The guys in the rod manufacturing section of greys have had a bit of a tiff a while back and a few off them have taken their ball in and wont let anyone else play, lol. The outcome of this is that a small new rod firm has been set up. The rods they are producing are the prodigy plus range just with a different name on and a very different price tag. I got offered a set of three from the shop the other day for £200. If I had the money on me I would have walked out with a smile. My budget just wouldnt go that far this month. I actually picked both rods up and they are exactly the same. Same blank, eyes, butt, everything, and they are offering the lifetime warranty on them as greys do. The firms name is SONIK and the model number is SK3. The shop I was in is stocking them at £100 each whereas the prodigy plus is labelled up at £140 quid even though they are exactly the same spec!
