Just wanted to find out the different types of hooklink material we use. Is it all braid, does anyone use a mono hooklink? I use kryston ton up which is on the extreme end of the scale but it keeps working for me and has never let me down, probably because its like string, but what do you lads use and is there anything people need to stay well away from?
25lb silk worm nice and flexible but check after each fish because the big ones can fray it depending on where you hook them.
for my surface rigs i use 30lb amnsia and just got the 35lb quick silver for my bottom fishing
Catlink 50lb + 70lb, but i may change over for next season when i seen the results of its claimed BS against what it actually broke at.
esp shockleader 45lb braid for me, as i usually cast pva bags so it dosen't tangle. i've also had a pike on it this season so i know it's pretty abrasion resistant.
50lb catlink and I have started using a 70lb mono (not sure of manufacturer) for livey's ............... its what I caught that pike on at Willowbank
A wide range then, just what i thought. Isnt it funny that we never venture or experiment with this one thing, once you have had a decent cat on something then its that from now on. Am thinking of changing away from the ton up next season as its a pain to get hold of, still fish it in venues with pike but when on the bottom i was looking for something a bit thinner and more supple.
give the 45lb shockleader braid a go. the only time i ever had to change a hooklink was with a pike. it's really good value too, 20m for a fiver. (not preaching; just suggesting so dont start on me)
Not gonna mate, am asking for input here so all suggestion welcome, dont get me wrong i adore the ton up, i think it is fantastic stuff and can stand up to any fish but on some pressured waters where the cats are a bit wary i think i will fell a bit more comfortable with something a thinner and more supple.
well i wouldn't change for anything for close to mid range fishing. the stuff is lovely and it absorbs flavours too. i can also recomend Fox Armadillo, my mate uses it a lot and he's never lost a fish on it due to the hooklink going.
I like 45lb quicksilver gold and 50lb Flourocarbon for lives. If i fish a water where there are no monster Cats I like to step down to 35lb Flourocarbon.
The quicksilver gold is ok for lives as well as its coated and is a bit stiffer than the nomal quicksilver.
i just use out strong lol but now takin the time to sort things out an make new hooklengths
Was looking at that quicksilver gold last night, liked the look of it. Torn between that or the ordinary quicksilver, might just get a spool of both and see which i prefere. Gonna have a good look at everything over the winter, get rid of some stuff and really get set too on the tackle box and set up. The main problem i have with the ton up is you just cant tie a proper hair rig with it.
why not? is it too thick?
Have you seen the ton up mate? 85lb hooklink braid its like bloody string but nothing damages it, bloody good stuff. I am just starting to think it might be hampering bait presentation sometimes.
maybe, m8. soft braids might be a better move, even if they d tangle a bit.
Thats the thing with the ton up it very rarely tangles, am thinking the kryston gold with the coating should help prevent tangles a bit.
just putting on a PVA bag solves most tangles, m8. you even get added attraction around your hookbait. maybe you could coat livies or deads in some sort of pellet powder to make them dry?
I know some people who flick maggots around the livey as in a pike or perch fishing approach, not sure if it makes a real difference though. The ton up is great with the liveys because of its thickness and stiffness, it complements a dumbell rig really well. Will still use it for that.
i might invest in some for that purpose. i'll be fishing some weird sh*t next season, i'll find somehting to use it for, lol. Kryston are a fantastic make.
