The next hot topic fellas is something i am banging my head against. Livebait and how to fish them on the hook to get the most out of them. Lets face it we have all fished them, some with more success than others, to be honest they are one of my favourite bait but thats just me but i would love to know what your favourite livebaits are and how you fish them either on the surface or not.
you know what i like karl and thats a nice big roach but i do wanna try trout next year
i tend to lip hook mine and fish them either lower depths early season then hav one surface one middle during the summer months. Bt due ot the size of livebait i can catch i use 2 on the hook to good effect.
Id lik to know how others hook them cos ive heard of better ways lik tail hooking etc bt when ever ive tried this the fish die quickly on me..
you simply cant beat perch. they say alive for longer then any other fish species, the hardy little devils. also they almost always swallow the hook so i dont feel so bad about hooking them i they're likely to die anyway.
if they've swallowed the hook on me they always die quickly so i only use the ones a lip hook, bt ive got a agree perch are good, one fish i want to try is a small carp

if they die when tail hooking, try tying a really short hair rig, like 4mm, and use a baiting needle to pull it through thr tail. use a little bit of plastic to form a hold against a boilie stop, thenth hook should sit nicely too, which allows you to use a smaller hook size ;-]
You may struggle with that as a lot of venues are a bit funny about it, mick at willobank will let you use anything but his carp but you can buy them at pondwood. I love rudd, they are tough little buggers, i hair rig them through the bottom lip, loop it over the hookshank and secure with some rig foam, they stay alive all night and swim away in the morning. Daves ides that one.
good idea
yer i lik to sound of it.. gunna hav to try and set up a few over the winter to see if i can get it
Will put a picture on the main site when i update it soon. Its good to attatch the rattle to also.
was tht the rig in the lastest wiskers?? where he had 3 small fish on it. shoal rig or something
Not sure mate will pick up a copy and check it out.
Carp livies have got to be my favorite, hooked through the nostril on a 2/0 Circle on either a polyball or dumbell.
The shoal rig is on page 16 of the latest Whiskers mag...excellent litle rig.
cheers catman :D will try both
Hair rig through the lip is also my method let them run the gaunlet all night if they survive the menace catfish they are free to swim off.
May be simple to most but I have made the mistake a few times when hair-rigging this way push the need from inside the mouth out through the bottom lip so it hangs in the water and swims with ease, otherwise it tends to twist and if it swims and struggles alot the braid will cut through its lip and its off free.
You may already know that
no i didnt, thanks slain :D tht may hav happened very easly to me, hopefully it wont now
have used the shoal rig myself - but given my season (and another blank last night) I am yet to catch but it looks really good having 3 or 4 little fish - I used a mix of roach and perch
carl
Gudgeon are also cracking when fished in multiple, trouble is not many venues hold them like they used to. I like a good big livebait, up to 8 inch if i have to, but my preference is one about 5inch long.
Indeed they are, I have fished them up at Fellview in Preston which is a lovely place to be.
Just a footnote you are only allowed to use livebait on a night session at Pondwood and you can not catch your own. There are about 10 night sessions a year (once a fortnight) when they start.
