Live bait (carp) are available after 6pm on Saturday Dave from the cafe comes round and takes your order £1 each. Rules are NO ground bait or loose feed of any kind hook baits only as it is a very small lake and easy to upset the balance. Thats why it fishes so well there are no piles of bait left by the carp lads to distract the cats. Best baits are mussles, baby bell cheese (whole), Worms, luncheon meat, live carp. Barbless hooks only! Minimum 15ib line and 42 inch net. www.pondwood.co.uk

Never been a full on carper so get the little buggers on the hook, Dan will kill me for that! ha ha. Sandy or dan as he actually is, is a carp angler i am currently showing the light too horse so excuse him for being a bit of a wimp about the little blighters. This venue sounds great though, will add it to the venue page on the main site thats for sure. Does it get busy midweek? Am gonna be out of action early next season as we are expecting our first child but am planning a bit of a national tour when it all calms down a bit so this one is defo on the list. Will be tapping you up for all the info though.

If its any consolation Mick breeds so many carp there that its not depleting the stock in any way they come out of the match lake which is grossly over stocked at present. Mind you my brothers and I fished there last year and Mick said "when the match finishes come over to the wiegh in and get some bait" well I thought we were going to get lynched when the match anglers found out we were raiding thier bag for live bait lol. We have tried all sorts of live bait and carp are best, roach they will take as well but perch are a no no never got a run all night on a perch swapped it for a carp at first light and got a 25 within ten minutes in the exact same spot. There are very few small carp in the cat lake lots of roach and big carp but very few young ones over about 2 inches.

Bit of extra info on pondwood it seems the cats went in there about 14 years ago and there were 12 of them about 15 inches long.

Ok people, I have a chance to get my season on track with a very important session at pondwood coming up. Anyone got any hints and tips, baits, rigs, swims etc?

Don't worry we will point you in the right direction!
Fish chunks, luncheon meat, halibut pellet, cheese all possibles.
Off the main bank in the open water for the big girls.

Use relatively small baits.  Smaller pieces of luncheon meat, chunks of fish rather than whole or half fish. These seem to produce better than using larger baits.  A big bunch of worms can also be effective, but these generally pick up the kittens.

As for tactics, fish are caught at all depths. Worth fishing a chunk of fish on a float 1-2 feet deep as this seems to produce.

Don't think swim location is to important but as Eric said there is a history of the bigger ones coming out in the open water from the car park swims.

Hope to see you there next week.  Probably won't be until the evening, but it would be good to meet.

Well!
Apparently a new record was set at pondwood last night Mick says one angler had 21 CATS!

64 out in total.  Down side biggest landed was 12lb but a lot of people snapped up using carp tackle!
